Usually, the more you win. The more it costs or there are a very large number of entries. The WSOP costs $10,000 to entry and had 2,576 entries. The prize pool was $24,556,400. The missing million is the operating cost levied by the casino.

The pay schedule varies from poker site to poker site, and the more players the more positions that are paid. On most sites: 50 players pays 10 places and 200 pays 20. You really must check each site. A generally rule of thumb for most online poker sites with less than 1000 entries First place will pay 25% of the total prize pool. Like the WSOP above the high finishers may only win back the entry fee.

You can enter the Big Payout poker tournaments 3 ways:

  1. Pay entry Fee.
  2. Win a satellite tournament. Usually a Satellite is a single table tournament. The entry fee is 1/10 th the Tournament Fee. Winner gets an entry into the target tournament.
  3. Win a super Satellite Tournament. A multi-table tournament where the prizes are seats to the target tournament awarded based on the number of entries

The winner of the 2004 WSOP won a satellite, to a super satellite to win his entry into the poker tournament. He turned $44 into 5 million.

Most small or medium poker tournaments are much simpler. Pay the entry fee and play your best poker. Freeroll tournaments are usually quite simple also but check the pay out schedule and other requirements like players' points or real money play required to enter or in some cases collect the prizes.

Know what the prize is, and know what the cost is. This will allow you to make the best use of your poker playing time.
